Evelene Mae McCoy, 95, entered eternal life on Thursday, March 7, 2019, surrounded by family at her home in Columbia, Virginia. She was born on May 9, 1923, in Fluvanna County, to the late John P. and Elizabeth Fowler Bland. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Walter and Charles Lee; and a sister who passed at a younger age. Left to cherish her memories are her brother, Horace Bland; two children, Jacqueline “Jackie” Henderson and Dwight McCoy; eight grandchildren, Alisa Henderson, Monica Sangare, Alvin Myers, Mashika McCoy, Daniela Henderson, Jimmie Henderson, Ruth McCoy, and Jonathan McCoy; five great-grandsons, Jemini Michel, Christopher Morrison, Joshua Henderson, Justin Sangare, and Jaydan Hargrove; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Evelene believed in being a self-made woman at a young age, so after graduating from Abrams High School, she went on to complete her two year degree at St. Paul’s College, and upon graduating she opened her own beauty salon in Farmville, Va. She eventually relocated to New York, where she attended Metropolitan School of Infant and Geriatric Care when she became a Practical Infant and Geriatric Care Nurse. She later attended York College to become a Real Estate Agent. She was a woman of many talents and had a strong work ethic, which she instilled into her family. Upon her retirement, she returned home to her family home place in Fluvanna, where she lived out her golden years being a grandmother, an active member of the community and a member of her church choir. “She was a wonderful and resilient mother and grandmother and she is leaving a vacancy that can never be filled, she will be missed greatly; we love you Ma.” Viewing will be held from 12 until 8 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Sheridan Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 17, 2019, at Sheridan Funeral Home, 4626 Cedar Lane Rd., Kents Store, VA 23084.
