Shumake, Sr., Charles Leland

Charles Leland ShumakeSr., of Bumpass, VA, went to meet his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 18, 2022 at the age of 93. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all. Charles was preceded in death by his wife and soul-mate, Dorothy Perry Shumake; his sweet daughter, Anita Shumake Graves; his parents, Lawrence and Bessie Shumake; brothers, Alvin Shumake and Manuel Shumake; and four sisters, Audrey Peetz, Lois Castleberry, Esther Gentry and Mary Vogt. He is survived by his children, Charles Shumake, Jr. (Gayle), Linda Woods (Tony), Arnold Shumake (Sone) and Norman Shumake (Jennifer); 14 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren that loved and cherished their grandpa; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was a veteran of the Korean War where he served our country proudly. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene and over the years served in many different positions. His love for the Lord was apparent in his daily life and to all that knew him.

He was a retired heavy equipment operator and loved to talk about bulldozers. After he retired, he loved making wood crafts, it was something he and his wife would work on together. They were quite the team and their children and grandchildren have many keepsakes from the crafts that he and his wife worked on so proudly together.

A special thank you to the staff at the Elizabeth House for the care and love that was extended to him and his family during his stay there.

Charles is now residing in his eternal home in Heaven, reunited with his wife and loved ones; his family knows they have another angel looking over them.

Funeral services will be held at 11am on Thursday, July 21, 2022 at Sheridan Funeral Home in Kents Store, VA, with visitation held one hour prior to the service from 10-11am.

  1. Was My FATHER INLAW for 41 years , I always loved and respected him . I will miss him now, but we will be together again in GLORY.

  2. My Uncle was the nicest person I knew. Always kind and loving. I have not seen him since my Mom’s death (Mary Vogt) but have thought of him and Dorothy so often over the years. The world is a better place because of this man and his wife. They will be missed. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to his children, grandchildren and greatgrand-childern. You are all blessed for having had him in your life.
