David Fred Cottrell, MSG E-8, US Army RET, of North Chesterfield, VA, died on July 9, 2019. He was born in Midland, TX, in 1928. David was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margarita "Terry" Cottrell. He is survived by his brother Michael Cottrell (Celeste), sister Patricia Williams (Thomas), daughter Soraya Scheibel (John), son Daniel Cottrell, numerous extended family members, and many friends, including devoted friend Mark Holmberg. David joined the US Navy at age 16 in 1944, saw action aboard the USS Cabot CVL 28 during the invasion of Okinawa, Japan. He resigned from the Navy in 1947 and enlisted in the US Army. He served in an MP battalion in Berlin, Germany, during the Russian blockade of that city; was in combat with the 17th Infantry in Korea during that conflict in 1952-53; served with the British Army of the Rhine as a liaison for four years. He also served in Southeast Asia in a War Room Contingency Planning Group in Joint Services Combat. David served in the military for 20 years and retired from federal service in 1965 at the age of 37. In civilian life, he worked as an officer for the Bank of America in San Francisco and retired from the work force as a real estate property manager in Richmond, VA. His hobby was growing and exhibiting roses and he was a consulting rosarian in the American Rose Society. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the loving care given to David by members of Lucy Corr Assisted Living and Heartland Hospice. Graveside services will be observed at 2:00 PM on Saturday, July 20, 2019, at Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church, Kents Store, VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions in tribute may be made to Richmond SPCA.

Rose Pickett Jones age 89, of Columbia, Virginia passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 4, 2019 at her home, surrounded by family members. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bruce, her siblings Jim Pickett, Jean Hall, William “Bumpsy” Pickett, and Anna Kelley, and her son Jeffrey Jones. She is survived by her other children Linda Jones, Bruce Jones III, and Beth Faulk, along with 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be on Wednesday, July 10, 2019 at 2:00 pm at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Columbia, Virginia. Priest Bill Wells will be officiating.

Ms. Arlene Manuel died peacefully at her home in Lake Monticello on July 4th. She was 81 years old. Arlene was born in Calcutta India on August 16, 1937, to Margaret and Eric Manuel. Arlene was a great lover of music. She stepped on to the night club scene in Calcutta India, singing lead, with only a true note, a keen ear for music, and a delightful smile. Before she began singing, she had an abiding love and talent for dance, particularly in the sphere of the jitterbug. Arlene is survived by her three children: Natalie Godfrey of Lake Monticello, Gerard Godfrey of Lake Monticello, and Michele Yoyetewa of Arizona. She has eight grandchildren, including Aaron Shifflett and Devon Shifflett of Lake Monticello. She also leaves behind 7 great-grandchildren. A Catholic Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 9th, with a gathering for friends and family at 10:00 a.m.

Emory Hall Austin III (Uncle Bo) age 63, died unexpectedly on June 25, 2019. He was born in Queens, New York to Emory and Gertrude Austin. He resided at Lake Monticello overlooking the River he so loved. His parents precede him in death. Emory is survived by his wife Donna Marsh Austin, sons Forrest (Jennifer) and Jake (Evyn) Austin; stepsons James (Katie) Sloan, Michael (Taylor) Snyder, and John Snyder; grandchildren Riley Ann and Kendall Austin, Rylan Mays, and Allie Sloan; sisters Barbara (Joe) Morgan, Carolyn (Buddy) Deverell, and Jane Austin; nephews Ed (Ruth) and Andy (Candice) Mallory, Christopher and Matt Deverell; nieces Brent Chambless and Katharine Beverley; and numerous grandnephews and grandnieces. Emory attended Fluvanna High School where he played football and ran track, then went on to Elon University on a lacrosse scholarship. He returned to work for Dominion Resources until he retired in 2017. Emory enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his motorcycle, playing with his granddaughters and spending time with his dogs Remmie and Cody. He was a devoted husband, dad and granddad who was also loved by his nephews for the time he took when they were growing up. Sheridan funeral home is handling the arrangements. There will be a Memorial Service on Sunday June 30 at 4PM at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Donations to your charity of choice may be offered in lieu of flowers.

Barbara Ann Martin Johnson departed this Earthly life and entered into eternal rest on June 10, 2019 at the University of Virginia Medical Center. She was a dedicated mother, compassionate grandmother and great grandmother, and an affectionate person with an amazing spirit. Barbara was a devoted member of The Haden Chapel United Methodist Church. She was loved by all and a blessing to many. Barbara is preceded in death by her mother Pauline Martin, her father Lawrence Payne, two brothers, Paul Martin and Arthur Martin, and one sister, Helen Dickens. She leaves to cherish her memory 5 children, Rhonda Washington, Herret Washington Jr. (Darlene Blair), Tina Washington (Steven Robinson), Derrick Johnson and his wife, Vallarie , and Kevin Johnson (Cassie Clark) all of Charlottesville, Va. Two brothers Lloyd Martin Sr. of Louisa, Va. ,Philip Payne Sr. and sister-in-law, Sandra Payne of Charlottesville, Va., one sister Pearl Greene of Washington DC., 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. A devoted niece and nephew, Patsy and Edward Jones of Charlottesville, VA. A special and devoted friend, Mary Clarke of Charlottesville, Va. and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Funeral services will be held at Lake Christian Church 733 S Boston Rd, Palmyra, VA. 22963 June 15, 2019 at 2pm. Interment will follow at the family cemetery. Nancy Bourne Wiebel 56, of Fluvanna Va Peacefully passed the evening of June 3, 2019. She was preceded in death by her parents Donald Wade Bourne and Fay Richardson Bourne, and one brother in law James Spears. She was survived by her husband Rusty Wiebel, one son Randall Wade Wiebel (Maria), one Grandaughter Viviana Skye, two brothers Donald Bourne (Thelma) of Harrisonburg, Keith Bourne (Sheila) of Green County, one sister Barbra Spears of Scottsville, One very special friend Vickie Herndon of Gordonsville, and a host of other family and friends. On Wednesday May 29, 2019, Floyd Ray Tanner, loving husband, father, and grandfather went to be with the Lord at the age of 87. He was preceded in death by his son, Steve, his mother, Emma, his father, Joe and ten of his siblings. Ray survived by his wife, Ruby of 62 years, his children Donna Smith (Tommy), Doug Tanner, Cheryl Jordan (Jay), and Joe Tanner (Sally), his grandchildren Michael Perkins (Rebekah), Timmy Perkins (Kacy), Jason Jordan (Anna), Ashley Goodman (Bobby), and Allison Smith (Scott), great-grandchildren Lillian Jordan, Caleb and Avery Perkins, and Liam Goodman, his sister Mable Wright, Bernice (Ludy) Dudley, Ruby Riner, Robert (Bob) Tanner, and Doris McDaniel. Ray is a Korean War Veteran where he earned a Purple Heart medal. Services will be held Saturday June 1 at 11am at Byrd Chapel United Methodist Church in Kents Store. Gerald “Jerry” Douglas Turner, 80, passed away on May 25, 2019. He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betty Jane Newton Turner; parents, Ed and Claire Turner; and brother, George Turner. Jerry is survived by his daughter Melissa Turner and her husband Dale Johnson; son Curtis (Bo) Turner and his wife Mary Beth; grandchildren, Mitchell, Brent, Tyler and Eva Morel; and Curtis (CJ) Turner. He is survived by his sister Jo Ann Turner Davis and niece Debbie Davis. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Christine Hilbert; niece Gayle Taylor and her husband Jeffery (Jeff); nephew Hunter Hilbert and his wife Laura; niece Cindy Kochersperger and her husband David; niece Lisa Snyders and her husband Jon; and numerous relatives. Born October 14, 1938, in Charlottesville, Virginia, he graduated from Fluvanna County High School in Palmyra, Virginia in 1957. He married his high school sweetheart Betty on April 4, 1958 and they moved to Richmond, Virginia where they had Melissa and Bo. Jerry served for six years in the U.S. Army National Guard (Active Duty and Reserves). Like his father, he worked for the railroad. He was a train dispatcher, starting with the B&O/C&O Railroad which changed to Chessie System and then CSX Railroad. In 1966, Jerry was transferred to Glen Burnie, Maryland where he enjoyed raising his family. As an active church member and deacon, he and Betty developed many close friendships within the churches in Maryland and Florida. Jerry was a member of the Annapolis Masonic Lodge and the Moose Lodge in Glen Burnie and Merritt Island. He enjoyed many activities including softball, basketball, bowling, fishing and hunting. As an active father, he was always there for his kids watching them play sports, taking them on trips and just hanging out. Jerry had a couple of heart attacks and went on disability at age 40. Throughout all of his health issues, he had that special spirit to keep going and enjoy life and help people. In late 2001, Jerry and Betty moved to Merritt Island, Florida to be near their daughter and grandchildren. He was so happy to have grandchildren and loved to play with them and was always there to watch them in sports or events. He especially enjoyed his time on the water fishing and boating with them. Throughout his life, Jerry maintained long lasting friendships and thoroughly enjoyed being a father and grandfather. He was known as Grandpa to most in his Florida community as well as “Big Jer” to Bo’s lacrosse family. He loved to meet and talk to people and we will all miss his laughter and humor. Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 1st, 2019 at Sheridan Funeral Home, 4626 Cedar Lane Road, Kents Store, Virginia. Interment will follow at Memorial Baptist Cemetery in Columbia, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church of Cape Canaveral or StickWithUs.org.

Betty Reese Gray (77) passed away May 23, 2019. Born in Charlottesville, VA on March 1, 1942 to the late Roy Lynn Reese and Hannah Sprouse Reese. She is survived by four daughters, Elizabeth A. Harvey of Waynesboro, VA, Catherine H. Fitzgerald (Steve) of Stanardsville, VA, Connie D. Small of Charlottesville, VA, and Beverly H. Wood of Staunton, VA. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Kristy Harvey, Melanie Coffey (Josh), Stephanie Wood, Jeremy Knight (Chelsea), and Benjamin Small. Five great-grandchildren, Briana and Kaylin Rose, Jesse Houghtaling, Damon Coffey and Parker Knight. A brother, William Larry Reese (Linda), sister-in-law Merleen G. Reese, a host nieces and nephews, and a dear friend Marshall Forren. She was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church, Lovingston, VA. The family will receive visitors on May 28, 2019 from 7-8 pm at the Sheridan Funeral Home in Kents Store. A graveside service will be officiated by Reverend John Campbell on May 29, 2019, at 2:00 pm at the Bybee’s Road Baptist Church Cemetery, 4989 Bybees Church Rd, Troy, VA 22974. Sheridan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
