Willie Marshall Hopkins, affectionately known as Marshall, went home to be with the Lord on November 11, 2022. Marshall was born May 10, 1937, in Louisa County, Virginia to Harry A. Hopkins and Grace P. Hopkins. Marshall is proceeded in death by his parents, his sister Joyce Brown, and his nephew Barry Brown. He is survived by his wife Shirley, three brothers Donald (Margaret) Hopkins, David Hopkins, Gerald (Susan) Hopkins, his children, Scott (Melissa) Hopkins, Stephen (Sharon), Kelley Hopkins and Patti (Steve) Rawls, A dear special friend Melissa Moyers, his grandchildren, Meredith (Taylor) Saxon, Mason Rawls, Lily Mae Hopkins, Perry Hopkins, Brady Hopkins, and Jackson Hopkins, along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Marshall was a 1957 graduate of Louisa County High School. He was an Army Veteran who loved his country. Marshall was the owner and operator of Hopkins Lumber Company, which served Louisa and surrounding counties. After retirement, if you knew Marshall, he had to be doing something. He could be found doing a little bit of everything from working with the county of Louisa to operating heavy equipment. His free time was spent with the ones he loved, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed working and tending to his garden. Marshall was a very active member in his church community and received recognition for being a Deacon for 38 years. Graveside service will be held at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church on Friday November 18, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. Sheridan Funeral Home will be handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.


John (Johnny) Howard Deane, 69, of Gordonsville, VA went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 12, 2022. He is now reunited with his wife of 44 years, Carolyn Diane Lindsay Deane who passed away earlier this year. Johnny was born on August 14, 1953, to Henry Hezekiah Deane and Alma Barbee Deane in Front Royal, VA. In addition to his parents he was also predeceased by his father and mother-in-law Wilbur Paul Lindsay Sr., and Janice Gibson Lindsay Stephens, as well as his two brothers Henry Lee Deane and Billy Edwin Deane and brother-in-law David E. "Huck" Lindsay. Johnny is survived by his brothers and sister in-laws; Henry Heath Deane (Alice), Ronald Hezekiah Deane (Patsy), sisters Linda Deane Davis and Sarah Deane Sisson (Phil); Brother-in-law Wilbur Paul Lindsay Jr., and sister-in-laws Janice L. "DeDe" Woodfolk and Nancy L. Butler (Bobby). Johnny was blessed with a large and loving family to include his two beautiful daughters, Karen Marie Deane Hart (Daniel Slade), of Gum Spring, VA and Kelly Ann Deane Shifflett (Monty), of Gordonsville, VA. Affectionately called “Papa Fish” by his grandchildren he loved telling them stories, teaching them to fish and spending time in the Outer Banks. They brought him so much joy and happiness. His grandchildren are Hayden Deane Hart, Gavin Slade Hart, Ivy Kaura Hart, Monty Lee Shifflett Jr. and Wyatt Cole Shifflett. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Johnny was a hard-working man and worked as a lineman until his retirement in the late 90’s. He also enjoyed working in his garden, restoring old boats and cars and fishing whenever he got the chance. Friends and family are invited to join us for a Celebration of Life that will be held at the home of his daughter, Karen Hart on Saturday, November 19, 2022, at 11am at 5587 New Line Road Gum Spring, VA.


Robert P. St. John, Jr. “Robby,” 51 of Goochland, passed away November 13, 2022. Robert was born January 23, 1971, in Charlottesville, Virginia to Valerie Jean St. John (Suptic) and Robert St. John, Sr.  He was proceeded in death by his mother and his wife Deanna Ann St. John. He is survived by one daughter Kylie V. St. John and his father Robert P. St. John.   Robby was a professional truck driver as well as an upholsterer with his own upholstery shop.  Norman Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Goochland County Fire-Rescue and Emergency Services.


William Walter Nicholas, Jr., 99, of Maidens, VA, passed away on November 3, 2022. He was born on August 18, 1923 in Hopewell, VA. He always loved going to the family farm growing up during the depression, because he could eat as much as he wanted. He graduated from Benedictine High School and entered service in the Army immediately after graduation. He served in combat in France during WWII in the 317th Infantry Regiment, and endured over 5 months as a prisoner of war. He had a lifelong love of chocolate - he survived on the troop ship to Europe eating only chocolate bars. After leaving the military, he became an apprentice electrician and went on to work at Richmond Electric Motor Repair fixingeverything from cookie factories (taking home a bucket of cookies for a successful job) to trains and ships. He studied at night school making his first TV himself. He went on to work at the DuPont Spruance plant rising through the ranks and eventually becoming an electronic specialist consultant to DuPont. He retired from DuPont (three different times) and worked on the family farm into his 90s, building up the strength of an ox to the end. He loved farming and all things nature, particularly going bass fishing on the Chickahominy River. He said that his good family is all that he could ever ask for in life and he will be dearly missed. He was happily married for 55 years to Carrie Owen Nicholas who preceded him in death. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Nicholas, who was killed in action in WWII, and his sister, Mary Betts Nicholas. He is survived by his children, Linda Rieksts (Oskars), Mary SusanMcNeill (Steve) and William Nicholas; grandchildren,Brian (Becky), Isaac, and David (Madi) Rieksts and Stephen and Jonathan McNeill; eight great-grandchildren,Adrian, Gaby, Will, Annya, Joshua, Sam, Caleb and Rosie Rieksts; and sister, Barbara Hellgeth and a host of nieces and nephews. He will be honored at a private service.Arrangements are being handled by Norman Funeral Chapel in Goochland, VA.


Sammie Morris, 65, of Troy, VA, passed away on October 15, 2022. He was born on November 26, 1956 to Albert and Mary Morris. Sammie is preceded in death by his father, Albert Morris, and brother, Roger Morris. He is survived by his mother, Mary Morris; son, Sammie Morris, Jr.; daughters, Crystal DeOrtiz Hector and Tina Morris (JJ Gibson); brothers, Gary Morris (Susan) and Jamie Morris (Betsey); sister, Patricia Herring (Lionel); nephew, Gary Morris, Jr.; niece, Melissa Dodson and four grandchildren. Sammie enjoyed fishing. A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Sheridan Funeral Home in Kents Store, VA.


Marie Hicks Hogue, 94 of Goochland, Va. Passed away on October 28, 2022. Marie was preceded in death by her husband Edward Hogue Jr, her mother Theadore Heffner Hicks, and her father Waverly Hicks. She is survived by her three children E.W. Hogue (Faye), Ted Hogue, Tana-Marie Hardaway (David) and her three grandchildren Jesse, Jamie, and Laura.  A graveside service will be held at 11Am on Wednesday, November 2, 2022 at Smyrna Baptist Church, 1470 Rock Castle Road, Goochland, Virginia. Norman Funeral Chapel of Goochland will handle the arrangements.


Jeffery Dwight Minor, 67, of Newport News, VA, passed away on October 2, 2022. He was born on November 13, 1954 to the late Marshall and Evelyn Minor in Newport News, VA. He graduated from Louisa County High School and attended trade school where he gained knowledge for several trades including welding, carpentry and heavy equipment operations. Jeffery then traveled to Washington, DC, Fairfax, Alexandria and Manassas, VA. He also resided in Augusta, GA for several years, eventually moving back to Virginia; first to Louisa, then later returning to his hometown in Newport News. He was also a member of New Hope Trinity Bible School in Manassas, VA where he became a deacon. His personal interests included all things sports, with a particular love for the Dallas Cowboys. He had a love of music, reading and poetry. His personality, charm and smile brightened rooms as well as people's lives as he will always remain to be the life of any party. Jeffery is survived by his older brother, George Minor (Lucy Kate) of Louisa, VA; two sisters, Elsie Marie Lassiter (the late Ervin) of Louisa, VA and Sylvia Ann Robinson (Calloway) of Martinez, GA; niece, Leslie Christmas; three nephews, George Minor, Shawn Minor and Anthony Robinson; a host of loving great nieces, nephews and cousins; close friends, Earline, Ervin, West and Vadim; and a very special and dedicated friend, Ronnie. Jeffery will lovingly be remembered and missed always. Arrangements are being handled by Sheridan Funeral Home in Kents Store, VA.


Jo Anne Wood Jacobs of Orlando, FL passed away in the early morning of October 24, 2022 at her home, surrounded by loved ones. She was born November 15, 1936 to the late Nancy and Samuel Wood of Rock Castle - Goochland, VA. Jo Anne was also preceded in death by her older brother, Dowell T. Wood, and younger brother, Samuel M. Wood. She was a devoted wife to the late Reuben "Jake" Jacobs and is survived by her three children: sons, Reuben "Buddy" Jacobs, Jr. and Eli Jacobs and daughter, Nancy Jo Jacobs. Jo Anne was a golf enthusiast to say the least and was an upstanding member of West Orange Country Club in Winter Garden, FL for over 35 years. She was also a longtime member of the Greater Orlando Orchid Society and grew hundreds of various orchid varieties at her home in Orlando, FL. Jo Anne will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 30, 2022 alongside her mother, father and brother at Smyrna Baptist Church, 1470 Rock Castle Road, Goochland, VA 23063. A viewing will take place at the church at 1:00pm with interment to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests you send donations to Smyrna Baptist Church. Lafoon, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Sr., 79, of Goochland, VA, passed away on October 17, 2022. He was preceded in death by his father, Herschel Reinheart Lafoon; mother, Bessie Viola Stanton Lafoon; and stepdaughter, Cynthia Martin Branch. He is survived by his sons, Franklin “Lanky” Lafoon, Jr. (Tanya) of Maidens, VA and Christopher “Chris” Lafoon (Denise) of Hadensville, VA; grandchildren, Tyler, Conner, Lucius, Cheyenne, Trey, Jake, Iyan and Arynn; stepdaughter, Jackie Williams, and her children, Brice, Aarron and Mackinzie; and numerous nieces and nephews. He served his country during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged in 1966. Afterwards, he became a carpenter and continued with his love for hunting and fishing. He will be greatly missed by all. Visitation will be held from 4-6 pm on Sunday, October 23, 2022 at Norman Funeral Chapel in Goochland, VA. John Misorek, 79, of Palmyra, VA, passed away on October 12, 2022. He was born on January 31, 1943 to the late John and Tessie Misorek. He is also preceded in death by his brother, Martin Misorek. John is survived by his wife, Cathleen Savage; children, Michael Misorek, Christie Savage and Michael Savage; granddaughters, Phaedra Savage and Stevie Savage; brothers, Roman Misorek (Karen) and Stan Misorek (Louise); nieces, Karen Misorek Trice (Brian), Natalie Misorek Curry (PJ) and Sara Misorek; nephew, Mark Misorek (Caroline); great nieces, Shana Misorek and Tessa Curry; nephews, Edward Misorek, Justin Trice, Jack Trice and Elliott Curry. John loved golf and originally started out as a caddy when he was a teen. He even had two hole-in-ones in his lifetime. Mass will be held at 11am on Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 4309 Thomas Jefferson Parkway, Palmyra, VA 22963.
