Samuel James Bishop passed away on September 21, 2021, at the age of 22 at his home in Palmyra, Virginia, after a courageous battle against cancer. He was born on November 13, 1998, in Richmond, Virginia. He was a loving son, brother, grandson and boyfriend. Sam is survived by his parents, Raymond and Lori, Vanessa Fleenor; as well as his sister, Riley; his brother, Wesley; and his grandparents, Paula Bishop and Sonny and Bertha Walters. He also leaves behind a loving girlfriend, Alysa Pugmire, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Sam graduated from Fluvanna County High School in 2017. After high school, he became a U.S. Marine and served in the Marine Corp Infantry as a rifleman. He loved his country and was very passionate about studying history. He loved the shooting sports, playing football, books and spending time with his family. He dreamed of finding someone to love and his girlfriend, Alysa, fulfilled that dream for him. For that, the family is forever grateful.
A memorial service will be held at Fork Union Presbyterian Church
on Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 2pm
. Visitation for family and friends will be
from 12:30pm - 2pm
. A private graveside service will be held for the immediate family following the service at their family cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation (
