Cynthia Scott Kent Butler

Cynthia Scott Kent Butler of Columbia, Virginia passed away February 11, 2025, just weeks after her 68th birthday. Her parents were Walter Scott Kent and June Ruth Kenny Kent of Columbia.

Cindy graduated from Fluvanna Senior High School and earned a B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Georgia. She was artistic, played the piano by ear, was a Fluco cheerleader and the percussionist in the high school concert band. Cindy was married to her college sweetheart Albert R. (Sun) Butler for sixteen years, his work taking them many places in the U.S. While they lived in North Carolina, they raised tomatoes for local restaurants on the Butler family farm and together played the guitar and sang in coffee houses. Cindy loved horseback riding, walking in the woods, playing in the ocean waves and sailing.

After her return to Columbia, Cindy rescued and cherished Angel, Honey, Flip-Chip, Pounce de Leon, Teddi-Spaghetti, Big Kitty, Smudge, Moon pie, Madeleine, Hannah-Banana and many other dogs and cats. Every stray became a pampered pet. She was a frequent visitor at Veterinary Referral & Critical Care in Manakin-Sabot, Virginia. Cindy was a thoughtful friend, always arriving, unasked, with exactly the help that was needed. She read voraciously – the classics, as well as mysteries and P.G. Wodehouse – and faithfully listened to Market Place, Fresh Air, and Peoples Pharmacy on NPR. She enjoyed trips to the Outer Banks and the Great Lakes with her sister Teresa Kent-Hennessy and brother-in-law Daniel Hennessy of Richmond, Virginia. She is also survived by her nephew Daniel Hennessy and his children.

The family suggests commemorating Cindy’s life by adopting a pet or donating to Caring for Creatures, 352 Sanctuary Lane, Palmyra, Virginia 22963.
