Douglas Clayton Haden, 87, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, October 14, 2023, after a series of brief health setbacks. He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Nancy.
In addition to Nancy, he is predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Edith of Troy, VA, brother-in-law Kenneth Winston of Richmond, VA. He leaves behind sons Clay (Leigh) and David of Troy, VA; daughter Kelly (Waine) McCann of Manteo, NC; sister Anne Winston of Richmond, VA; grandchildren Eric (Jessy) Payne; Ashley (Tim) Jones; Emily (Jesse) Lamphere; and Leslie and Matthew Haden. His great grandchildren include Paislee and Hudson Jones, and 4 bonus great grandchildren. Doug was born May 27, 1936 in Troy, and grew up alongside his sister Anne Carol. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army for six years. He loved spending time outdoors which led to his ability to grow a bountiful garden. After a lifelong career as an electrician, he was able to tinker on his many small engines and enjoyed anything that was a “do-it-yourself” project. He almost always succeeded with a smart fix to repair just about anything. He loved cutting and splitting his own wood, even in his last years, and nothing was better than sitting by his woodstove listening to bluegrass music. He also played the mandolin and relished the time “picking” with his friends. Doug was a good neighbor who was always ready to lend a helping hand. As a longtime member of Beaverdam Baptist Church, he volunteered his time and skills there as well, making dedicated lifelong friends whom he cherished.
A private graveside service will be held at Beaverdam Baptist Church.
