Elliott Herweyer

Herweyer, Elliot Elroy, 93, of Goochland, Virginia, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2023. Born in Moddersville, Michigan, he and his nine siblings grew up farming, hunting, and fishing before he left Michigan to spend his life teaching and helping others.

Beginning his working career in the US Merchant Marine in the Great Lakes, he moved on to serving in the US Navy during the Korean War before earning his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Richmond on the GI Bill and a bachelor’s degree in Divinity from Union Theological Seminary. Reverend Herweyer served as pastor at Gwathmey Baptist Church in Ashland, Virginia, Hillside Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, Salem Baptist Church in Crozier, Virginia, and Salem Baptist Church in Sparta, Virginia.

During those 20+years as pastor, he also worked as a Fuller Brush salesman, drove school buses in the west end of Richmond, taught math and science classes at local high schools, served as principal of Cardwell Elementary School for a year, volunteered
as chaplain for Goochland County Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, was chaplain and counselor at Beaumont Learning Center in Powhatan, and was the general contractor on a variety of building projects. Until retiring at the age of 91, he was an award-winning engineering sales rep for Aerco International. Predeceased by his parents, John and Hattie Herweyer, his first wife, Selma, and his second wife, Eleanor, five brothers and two sisters, he is survived by two brothers: John Lee Herweyer (Cindy) and Larry Herweyer (Donna); three children: Cathy Herweyer, Steven Herweyer (Virginia), and Heather Herweyer Slater (Stratford, Sr.), five grandchildren: Jason Marks, Justin Marks (Jackie), Tucker Slater (Meredith), Stratford Slater, Jr. (Kaytlyn), Savannah Slater, and five great grandchildren, Veda Marks, Moss Marks, Max Marks, Blake Marks, and Sadie Slater.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Norman’s Funeral Home, 2982 River Rd West in Goochland from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 18, at 11:00 a.m. at Calvary Chapel, 3394 River Road
West, Goochland, Virginia.
