Margaret Fleming Glass

On July, 28, 2020, Margaret Fleming Glass quietly passed away at her home in Dixie. She was 81. Margaret was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Roger W. Glass; her parents, Robert and Margaret Fleming; a sister, Lillian Estelle Fleming; and a brother, Robert "Sonny" Fleming. She is survived by two daughters, Kathy Tapscott and her husband, Tracey, of Scottsville, and Debora G. Butler of Fork Union; and two sons, Roger W. Glass, Jr. and his wife, Heidi, of Fork Union, and Steven M. Glass of Troy. She is also survived by a grandson, who she raised and loved as a son, Roger Todd Adcock, and his wife, Leigh Anne, of Woodridge. Additionally, she is survived by 9 more grandchildren, 18 great- grandchildren, and a slew (one of her favorite words) of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom she loved dearly.   Margaret, known as Peggy to friends and family, grew up in Columbia, Virginia. She married her High School sweetheart and settled down in Dixie - basically half way along Route 6 between her parents and his.  Peggy was the mother of four and mothered all of her children's friends - football players, nursing students, a special clique, and church choir singers.   Peggy worked for 30+ years at the Post Office in Columbia, VA. She started as a clerk after the Postmaster asked her one evening at church choir practice if she wanted the job. (The ease of simpler times.) She stayed on and eventually became the Postmaster herself. She was particularly pleased when, in 1976, all Postmasters were asked to sign a small card recording their post office. The cards are on file at the National Archives in Washington, DC.   Peggy's love of family expressed itself in many ways - in particular, through her dedication to genealogy and hosting family gatherings. She scoured the local courthouses and church cemeteries for more than 40 years searching for lost family connections. Not satisfied with  just restoring family history, she hoped to create memories for everyone by hosting family gatherings - an annual Glass Thanksgiving dinner for extended family, and annual Glass and Wood family reunions. Nothing seemed to make her happier than a large family gathering with the traditional southern table groaning under the weight of good food.   In addition to creating and collecting family memories, Peggy was a lifelong collector of things. She collected it all - from china tea cups, to straight razors, to Christmas ornaments. She enjoyed sharing her latest find and adding a new family of things to her varied collections.   Family visitation will be on Friday, July 31 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Sheridan Funeral Home in Kent's Store. A graveside service at Fork Union Baptist cemetery will be held on Saturday, August 1 at 10:00 am.   In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
