Walter Lee Haney

Walter Lee Haney, 85, of Palmyra, passed away on March 1, 2022, after a recent illness. Walter Lee was born on April 1, 1936, in Fluvanna County to the late Walter Scott and Virginia Lee Haney. After graduating from Fluvanna High School, Walter Lee entered the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Korea. He then worked for Centel/Sprint Telephone Company for 30 years, and upon retirement, he built his own house and other houses with his best friend, Everett Breeden.

Walter Lee is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley; his daughter Sara Miles and her husband Eric Miles; his daughter Amy Reese and her husband Michael Reese; his sister Phyllis Holt and her husband Dave Holt from Bloomfield, Indiana; his sister Betty Mann of Charlottesville, Virginia; his brother Kenny Haney of Axton, Virginia; his brother David Haney of Palmyra, Virginia; his brother Ritchie Haney of Richmond, Virginia; his grandchildren Hayden Miles, Ellie Miles, Hallie Reese, and Aaron Reese; and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he loved as his own.

Walter Lee enjoyed farming and raising cattle for many years, however his main passion was always fox hunting. He hunted from the time he was a little boy and in later years, he loved to judge field trials. He was an avid sports fan, whose greatest pleasure was attending his grandchildren’s events and cheering on the New York Yankees and the UVA Cavaliers. Above all, Walter Lee was a devoted family man and the beloved patriarch of the Haney family and will be greatly missed. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, March 4, at Sheridan Funeral Home, Kents Store. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, March 5, at 2:00 pm at Cunningham United Methodist Church, Palmyra, Virginia.
