Philip Wade McLaughlin was raised by father, Neil Wade McLaughlin; “Momma C,” Catherine Denise McLaughlin; and mother, Jody Lynne Bryant (Scottie Bryant). On Thursday, April 16th, Philip went to be with the Lord. He was predeceased by his brother, Tristan Cole McLaughlin. Along with Philip’s parents, he is survived by his brothers, Ryan Neil McLaughlin (Ana Belén), and Dylan Andrew Dever, as well as by his close friend, Katherine (Katie) Lynn Shifflett, whom he loved like a sister.
Philip lived life to the fullest! While he struggled with various health issues throughout his life, he did not let that define who he was. Philip showed love and affection to everyone that he met, having a lasting impact on their lives. He instilled a feeling of acceptance and care in the hearts of many and, through this, his memory will not soon be forgotten.
In Philip’s earlier years, he was involved with the Area 4 Special Olympics in Harrisonburg/Rockingham County, where he participated in numerous sporting events. Philip graduated from Spotswood High School in 2011, where he served as a representative and a valued member of their Special Education Program, helping raise awareness for the importance of inclusion and promoting growth towards a better future for students with disabilities. Throughout his time at Spotswood High School, Philip met many different teachers and students who enriched his life in so many ways. Through this, he developed life-long relationships and remained in close contact with many of these individuals, even after graduation.
In 2013, following Philip’s graduation, he moved to the Comanche House in Richmond, VA, which is owned and operated by Good Neighbor Community Services. He was very active during his time there as he attended a Day Support program and participated regularly in events held by the local community.
Phil was loved by his parents and all of his family members. While we are left heartbroken, we find joy in knowing that he now sits at the feet of Jesus. After years of being limited with his speech, we can only imagine how much he has to say today!
