Patricia Powell

Patricia Sams Powell, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away on February 18, 2025, at the age of 76. 

Born on May 23, 1948, she was the daughter of the late Ollie Mae Grant and Hugh Sams and a proud native of Newton County, Georgia. Pat was a graduate of Mercer University and worked for Newton County Public Schools for over a decade. In her later years, she made her home at Lake Monticello in Fluvanna County, Virginia, where she spent her retirement. 

Pat was the devoted mother of Robby Powell (Amanda) and Ryan Powell, and grandmother to Ethan, Annelise, and Hudson Powell. She also leaves behind two brothers, Donald Sams and Randy (Brenda) Sams, niece Dana Burton (Travis and grandnephews Ajax and Leo) She took immense pride in her sons, Robby and Ryan, who were her greatest joy. Pat’s love for her son’s was immeasurable, and her pride in them knew no bounds. A woman of deep faith, Pat was a dedicated member of Zion United Methodist Church in Troy, Virginia. Pat was a true Georgia peach. She carried the warmth of the South in her heart, even when faced with the cold, unwelcome grip of Virginia winters, which she never quite forgave. 

Though she may have endured the snow, her soul always belonged to the sunshine, sweet tea, and Southern hospitality she cherished so dearly. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at Zion United Methodist Church in Troy, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her honor to Zion United Methodist Church or a charity of your choice.
