James M. “The Grizz” Powell

James M. Powell (The Grizz), of Palmyra, VA passed away Sunday, May 22, 2022. Born February 14, 1957 to the late Lorraine Hughes Powell and Harry Gilman Powell Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Bonita Powell; daughter Cassie Fox and her husband Scott Fox; grandchildren Destiny Bourne, Faith Bourne, and Christian Bourne; great-grandchildren Lillian Bollinger and Sophia Wills; brother Gil Powell; nephew Luke Powell and his children; and many other extended family and friends that thought highly of him. Also held close to his heart his two best friends Donnie Dodds and Jeff Rice. James was one of a kind. He was well known for his kindness and generosity, pristine work ethic, love of hunting (having an outstanding ability to call in a turkey), sense of humor, fondness of a cold beer, Jim Beam, and Wild Tukey 101, enjoyment of camping and bon fires, and his endless love for his family.  There was nothing in this world like his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Whenever you talked with James, you could expect to hear a story or two and maybe even see a picture of his grandchildren or great-grandchildren. He enjoyed nothing more than making memories with his grandchildren and passing on his hunting knowledge and skills. He had a heart of gold and never met a stranger. James would give the shirt off his back or the last dollar in his pocket to anyone. No matter who you talked to that knew James, you could bet there will be a story about him. In his short time on this earth, he made a huge impact on many lives and will never be forgotten. Services will be held at 11:00 on Friday, May 27, 2022 at Salem Methodist Church with Gary Osteen (Buckshot) officiating. Interment will follow at Salem Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
