Thomas Maynard Reid, Jr.

Thomas M. Reid, known to his loved ones as Tommy; a husband, father, grandfather, and brother, has passed away and gone to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 6th, 2024.

Tommy was born in Princeton, WV in 1938 and spent his childhood on a farm before moving to Roanoke in 1952. There, he met his beloved wife, Billie, and they were married in 1959. Tom went to work for the Roanoke Police Department in 1961. He spent 15 of his 30 years as a Youth Officer with the Roanoke City Police Department (1961-1990). During this time, he completed the F.B.I Academy for local law enforcement and eventually moved on to become a Commander before retiring. During his tenure, he received a Meritorious Service and Outstanding Leadership Award.

As a retired police officer, Tom was a hardworking man with a gruff exterior and a heart of gold. He and Billie opened two gift and card shops to keep him busy. Tom enjoyed interacting with customers, going on buying trips, and stocking goods because it was so different from his previous job. He was a very family-oriented man, and as such, decided to move to Goochland in 1998 to be close to his only daughter, son-in-law, and his two granddaughters. This move enabled Tom to engage in another of his favorite pastimes: building.  He, along with family assistance, built the house that has been considered home for well over two decades.

He loved moving to Goochland as he had a chance to be the person that those around him knew he was meant to be: a coach and volunteer for the youth. He coached sandlot football for many years in Roanoke and, when he moved to Goochland, he was thrilled to find time to coach youth sports.

In 2005, Tom became a soccer coach at Goochland Middle and High schools, spending his other free time volunteering in the school’s concession stand as their grill chef. Tom led the High School Girls Soccer team to second-in-state and enjoyed his 12 years of coaching both the middle and high school girls’ teams; his two granddaughters were on those teams for many years. In addition to coaching, Tom spent time volunteering with Goochland Cares, Christmas Mother, and he and Billie both qualified to become CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) volunteers.

Tom loved to travel and during retirement, he and Billie cruised the world, spending more than 500 days on cruises and visiting places like Antarctica, Australia and New Zealand. He is greatly loved and missed by his wife and traveling companion of 64 years, Billie Reid. He is also loved and missed by his daughter, Shara Cleveland (Bill, 1960-2021); Granddaughters, Annelle (Samantha) and Kayla (Kirk); his brother Charles; and sisters: Jo, Callie and Sandy. Tom is cherished and remembered by many extended family members, including Patty, Teresa, Kathy, Jake, Rowan, and too many friends and former athletes to list.

Tom left an impression on many and he left many of his extended Goochland family with this quote as they graduated or moved forward in life:  “The good news is that the moment you decide that what you know is more important than what you have been taught to believe, you will have shifted gears in your quest for abundance.   Success comes from within, not from without.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
