VERREL R. HUGHES

Verrel R. (Sonny) Hughes, a cherished husband, devoted father, beloved grandfather and great-grandfather, esteemed friend, and pillar of the community, passed away on December 6, 2023. Sonny dedicated 44 years of his life as a land surveyor and served honorably in the Army for 2 years, stationed in South Korea.

His unwavering faith was evident in his roles as both Elder and Deacon at Providence Presbyterian Church. He was always there for his church, eager to help whenever needed. Sonny and Linden’s love of travel led him to traverse all 50 states. He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and a profound appreciation for life's journeys.  He found immense joy in farming, nurturing gardens, and embracing the beauty of the outdoors.  Sonny possessed an outgoing nature and had an exceptional gift for connecting with people—never encountering a stranger, only potential friends. His magnetic personality was complemented by his love of storytelling.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Verrel and Ruth; and his sisters Edna Grant and Ruth (Keyhole) Parrish.   He is survived by his wife of 57 years Linden, 2 daughters Laura Spicer (Karl) and Julie Cleal (Dave), 6 grandchildren Luke, Zach and his wife, Kent, Ethan, Rachel, and Adam and one great granddaughter.

Graveside service will be held Saturday Dec 9, 2023 @ 11:00am at the Lacy Sheridan Cemetery, 6176 Cross County Road, Mineral, Virginia, followed by a reception for family and friends at Providence Presbyterian Church, 3388 Three Chopt Rd. Gum Spring, Virginia.   In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Providence Presbyterian Preschool Scholarship Fund, PO Box 51, Gum Spring, VA  23065.
